Stan the Sturgeon
Stan the Sturgeon is a student-centered, Grade 8 curriculum-based program for Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba that will literally have students climbing the walls as they discover the relationships that influence the health of the Saskatchewan River Basin.
Students use systems thinking, teamwork, and creativity to build a large wall model of the Saskatchewan River Basin out of recycled materials.
It’s the luck of the draw! Projects are assigned by lottery fish chips so students do not know before the draw what project they will be doing.
Components of the wall model of the Saskatchewan River Basin are made up of various projects that are created by small groups of students. Students are tasked with adding to the wall model as they work through various units of Stan the Sturgeon! Students will learn about the Saskatchewan River Basin, fish habitat, water quality, human impacts, fish species, and so much more!
NEW Stan the Sturgeon Role-Playing Scenarios!
We are excited to announce that with the generous support of SaskPower, we have produced 3 more Stan the Sturgeon Role Playing Scenarios! Now your students can plunge in and learn to take a role in water system management.Challenge your students to examine the complexities of water system issues from the various viewpoints of the stakeholders. Can they find common ground and work together to resolve problems? Transform information into experience by engaging students in four role-playing scenarios that represent real-life issues in the Prairie Provinces.
These scenarios are available in both and English and French versions for download.
