Saskatchewan Envirothon

What is Envirothon

What is it?

Envirothon is an exciting event in which teams of five high school aged students exercise their environmental training and problem-solving skills in a competition centered on four universal testing categories (i.e., soils/land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, and wildlife) and a current environmental issue. Team members experience the world in which we live through environment education, hands-on activities, including current and up-to-date issues.  The Olympic style competitive nature of some aspects of the program affords participants an opportunity to travel, learn, experience, and compete provincially and internationally. Envirothon helps to prepare our young people (tomorrow's leaders) to better understand and influence the world in which they live, regardless of the path chosen.

We challenge you to become involved with the Envirothon Program!

Who can compete?

A team consists of five students and one Advisor/Teacher from the same school.  In order to participate in Envirothon, the Advisory/Teacher must register the team  (See Team Registration for deadlines).   There will be a limit of 20 teams for this years competition.

What is involved?

Envirothon is a great time to learn about soils, land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife, and a current environmental issue. In the fall, registered teams will receive a series of materials and CD.  Students will study the supplied materials to prepare for the event.  These materials will contain all of the information needed to answer the questions on the Trail Test and the Oral Competition.

Workshop

A 1 day workshop will be held in April.  This workshop is a great opportunity to learn about Envirothon and gain some practical experience and knowledge.  Students will be required to choose 2 topics as their 'major' for intense training session.  This minute 'major' session will allow the students to gain some hands-on experience using the same equipment that they will be using on the Trail Tests as well as learning additional information on their topics.  There will also be a mini Trail Test set up to allow the students and Advisory/Teachers to familiarize themselves with the format and type of questions on the test.

History of Envirothon in Saskatchewan

In 2002, Saskatchewan high school teachers began requesting the Envirothon program be brought to Saskatchewan. In 2006, the Partners FOR the Saskatchewan River Basin lead a group of high school teachers and other interested individuals to the Manitoba Envirothon to learn what was involved in putting on an environmental competition. Soon after that, an organizing committee was struck and the planning for Saskatchewan’s first Envirothon began.

Saskatchewan’s First Envirothon was held in 2007 at Blackstrap SK with 7 teams, 35 students, 9 teachers and 22 volunteers.
